Kelsie was 17 when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune illness, a disease which causes internal bleeding, immune system issues and failure of the digestive system.
After years spent trying to control her illness with medications, Kelsie made the difficult decision to go ahead with surgery.
Kelsie worked with medical specialists at the new Mater Young Adult Health Centre in Brisbane, a unique service specially designed to address the needs of young adults with chronic illness.
“I honestly don’t know how I would have survived if it weren’t for the doctors and specialists at Mater’s Young Adult Health Centre. The centre gave me something to live for. There’s inspiration there, creativity and positivity—it's what life is all about.”
After undergoing five surgeries, Kelsie recovered successfully. She now works for QUT and was finally able to fulfil her dream of travelling the world.
