This year, your support enabled Deaf Connect to be a principal sponsor of the 60th Australian Deaf Games. Over 1,000 athletes and supporters from all over Australia and the Pacific flocked to Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for the 10-day event. 2024 marks 60 years since the first Australian Deaf Games, which were held in the summer of 1964. The Games showcased a spectacular array of culture, talent and sportsmanship, providing athletes with the opportunity to compete in over 16 different sports.
“Being part of the 2024 Australian Deaf Games was truly inspiring,” said a Deaf athlete who attended the games.
The atmosphere of unity, mateship, and determination was incredibly impactful. I was part of a team that won a gold medal in mixed netball and silver in basketball. It was a truly unforgettable experience competing against friends, forging new relationships, and I can’t wait to come back in 2026.”- Australian Deaf Games Athlete
The games have also ignited a sense of connection off the field by celebrating the achievements of Deaf athletes throughout history. Opening one week prior to the games, Newcastle Library’s Lovett Gallery held an exhibition titled “More Than Sport” which showcased Deaf athletes' stories from across Australia and around the world through a series of videos, photographs and memorabilia.
This community outreach has helped to ensure that the next generation of individuals in the Deaf community feel connected, supported and proud to share their experiences and culture. Your support of the Deaf Lottery enables Deaf Connect to continue to sponsor events that serve and unite the community.
