What is Powerball and how does it work?

Powerball is a popular lottery introduced to Australia in 1996 and is played every Thursday night. Powerball offers a larger prize compared to other lottery games.

The current drawing involves two sets of numbered balls:

  • The first barrel has 35 balls of which seven are chosen at random.
  • The final Powerball comes from a barrel of 20 numbers.

If a player matches the first seven plus the extra ball, it is a Division 1 win worth millions of dollars. The chances of winning the grand prize are 1:134,490,400. These odds mean that it is not unusual that no one picks all of the right numbers.

If several weeks go by without a winner the jackpot can grow into a huge prize. The largest reward so far was $200 Million in February, 2024.

What type of Powerball tickets are available?

There are 4 types of tickets: Standard, Powerhit, Systems & Syndicates

What is a Standard ticket?

A Standard game in Powerball is made up of 7 main numbers and 1 Powerball number. Each standard game gives you one chance of winning a prize. Game numbers can be chosen manually or automatically using the QuickPick function. The minimum ticket you can purchase is 4 game lines.

To play you will need to choose 7 main numbers from 1 to 35, as well as 1 Powerball number from 1 to 20.

How to win Powerball?

Match 7 winning numbers and the Powerball to win Division 1 in Powerball. Winning combinations for each division are shown below. For each game line on your ticket, only the highest division is paid out.

Division 7Any 5 main winning numbers1:892
Division 8Any 3 main winning numbers + the Powerball1:188
Division 9Any 2 main winning numbers + the Powerball1:66

Most people think they need to get all eight numbers correctly, but you do not have to pick perfectly to win a prize.

This lottery divides its awards into nine divisions. The more numbers you get, the greater your winnings.

Keep in mind you can win a Division 9 prize by correctly picking two general numbers and the Powerball.

There are several ways to increase your odds of winning a prize. Many people take part in lottery syndicates which are groups of people who agree to split the prize if anyone wins.

Here are other options you should consider:

  • A PowerHit entry guarantees that your ticket will match the extra ball.
  • A Systems entry option gives you the chance to pick anywhere from 8 to 20 general numbers. This choice increases the chances you will win a prize in a higher division.

Can you win Powerball by matching only two numbers?

To win a prize in Powerball you need at least three correct numbers: two general numbers and the Powerball. The final ball is a critical pick for winning in the lower divisions.

The importance of this pick is one reason that PowerHit entries that guarantee a Powerball match are popular. They increase the chances that you will move up to a higher prize division.

To win with numbers for the first barrel, you must pick at least five correctly.
