A retired man from rural New South Wales was the sole winner of the incredible $80,000,000 Powerball jackpot. The man, who is in his 70’s, has been an Oz Lotteries customer for four years.

Oz Lotteries CEO, Mike Veverka, called the winner at home on Friday morning to deliver the good news.

Upon finding out about his huge win, he was teary and in disbelief. However, he “tried not to get too excited until the money is in the bank”.

He said it wouldn’t fully sink in until he saw the money in his account. Being in his 70’s he stated: “I couldn’t possibly spend all of this by myself.”

When asked how he might spend his winnings, he said he could never possibly spend this amount of money in his years and will be using it to help out his large family. But one thing he is looking forward to is being able to afford satellite TV.

The deserving man and his family were affected by both the drought and bushfires earlier this year and were close to evacuation.

When asked how he’s been impacted by the current COVID-19 pandemic, being in a vulnerable age group, he said he is being very cautious about his movements. The humble winner was still able to make light of the situation, joking: “I’ve been in lockdown since I retired 2 years ago!”

He is now excited to celebrate his life-changing win at home with his family.

Being the only Division 1 winners of the $80,000,000 jackpot makes him the third-biggest individual lottery winner in Australian history.
