Three of the thirteen Division 1 winners from one of the $4,000,000 Saturday Lotto draws were either retired or on the verge of retirement. Their Division 1 prizes, worth over $320,000 each, have given them a new lease on life.
“I’m so happy that my numbers came up!” said the first winner, a man in his sixties from Wetherill Park in Sydney’s western suburbs. “I’m going to be mortgage-free!”
His winning 10-game Standard ticket was purchased from a local newsagency and the win was a long time coming: “I picked my favourite numbers about twenty years ago and until the weekend’s draw, I think the most I ever won was about $100!”
He said the win was “incredible” and that it hadn’t quite sunk in yet, but that he planned to have a “quiet celebration” with his family.
The second winning ticket belonged to a couple in their sixties from the Sydney suburb of Hornsby, but they didn’t realise they were Division 1 winners until a few days after the draw. The winning husband said he had checked his 12-game Standard ticket at a local newsagency and they had told him he’d won a “decent” prize, but it wasn’t until he called lottery officials that he realised just how decent!
“My wife told me someone had been calling asking to speak with me but I wasn’t home. I thought hang on, you get a phone call when you win Division 1!”
The man said he had been playing those numbers for about thirty years and he had big plans for the money. “I’m in my 60s and I don’t have enough superannuation to retire, so I thought I’d be working for another 10 years. Now I can retire much earlier.” The couple also planned to pay off their car and travel overseas for the first time.
Meanwhile in Eaglehawk, a town north west of Bendigo in Victoria, another couple were celebrating after their 12-game Quickpick brought them an unexpected windfall. “I still haven’t come down from cloud 9” said the winning husband, “We’re still pinching each other!”
He said that they had their pets to thank for the prize, explaining how they had gone to the shops to buy dog and cat food when they remembered to buy their TattsLotto ticket. He joked that the pets would be getting extra food in their bowls as thanks.
The couple, who bought their house later in life and never expected to own it outright, said they would use their winnings to “clear their mortgage for good”. The husband laughed that he no longer had to worry about interest rates and that it was “a huge relief”.
“I look forward to striding into the bank with a big smile on my face and telling them I have enough to pay off our loan once and for all!”
In addition to paying off their mortgage, they plan to travel around Australia in a caravan and go on an English holiday. The husband added that he’d like to buy himself a “spiffy” ride on mower for the yard.
The winning numbers from Saturday Lotto draw 3609 on Saturday the 20th of February were 30, 5, 17, 22 42 and 26, plus supplementary numbers 19 and 36.
